The
goal of Downtown Lakewood Blossoms is to enhance the beauty of the downtown area by providing a low-cost, low maintenance solution to merchants in the downtown area. An aesthetically pleasing environment at the street level will attract pedestrian activity, a key element of a vital business district.
The Downtown Lakewood Blossoms program currently utilizes “Garden in a Box” Earth Box™ flower boxes. These 3-ft long window boxes are designed with a water/fertilizer reservoir which eliminates the need for daily watering, a major concern of busy retailers. Water is replenished through a tube at the surface, thereby avoiding the mess of overflow water and dirt. Each box uses 2 cubic feet of potting s
oil, providing the mass required for the deep roots systems that will develop with the mass planting effect we seek.
In 2009, community services workers, as directed by Lakewood Municipal Court, will assist in weekly watering of the flower boxes in the Downtown Lakewood district.
The Downtown Lakewood Blossoms committee also coordinates with the City of Lakewood and Keep Lakewood Beautiful in the maintenance and beautification of Sinagra Park in the heart of the business district.
The Coral Company provides the eight hanging baskets and contribution towards maintenance.
Volunteers for Lakewood Methodist Church maintain flowers in the large planters during the summer season.
